PUZZLED BY CODES & STANDARDS? HOW CODES AND STANDARDS CAN HELP PREVENT LEGIONNAIRES’ DISEASE
Wednesday, May 11 @ Noon EDT
This webinar will cover the model building or technical codes, such as the model plumbing and mechanical codes, and consensus industry standards and guidelines that, if followed, can help to control the growth of Legionella bacteria in building water systems. Provisions in these documents cover design and installation of building water systems, including equipment standards and operation and maintenance activities which, if followed properly, can help to keep a building water system safe and healthy. Additionally, you will learn about:
• Common misconceptions about what the model codes require and do not require with particular respect to domestic hot water systems and Legionella prevention, including the common misconception about temperature requirements in the codes, which often leads to the fallacy that one has to choose between scalding and Legionella.
• The development, scope, and built-in shortcomings of the model codes with respect to Legionella prevention, especially as these codes do not provide for continuing inspection and monitoring of the operation and maintenance activities of a building owner.
• If there is room for improvement in the model building codes to contain provisions for Legionella Risk Management through the processes developed by ASHRAE (Standard 188 and Guideline 12) and the CDC, or whether such provisions are better suited to adoption and enforcement by another route, such as through a state health department.
