PUZZLED BY WICRA? SEPTEMBER 30

Construction events can negatively impact water quality causing spikes in waterborne pathogens such Legionella. These events include excavation, water main breaks, water pressure changes, brown water events, construction material changes, dormancy prior to occupancy, and ineffective disinfection during or after commissioning. An ASHRAE Standard 188 water safety and management plan provides guidance to address Legionella risk during major construction and renovation activities.

The Infection Control Risk Assessment (ICRA) has become a common process for identifying infection hazards associated with facility construction and renovation. This approach traditionally focuses on activities which impact ventilation, dust generation, and construction methods with little emphasis on water systems and waterborne pathogens. Developing a Water Infection Control Risk Assessment (WICRA) can help secure patient safety and the facility’s reputation from the consequences of waterborne disease associated with water system construction, renovation, or maintenance activity.
