PUZZLED BY LEGIONELLA THE POTENTIAL SMOKING GUN IN YOUR WATER SYSTEM?

During the past five years of doing Legionella environmental assessments, the speaker has seen the (potential) “smoking gun” in the building’s water distribution systems and in other water features such as hot tubs, cooling towers, and fountains. This short presentation will mainly focus on the premise plumbing’s potable water system. In this presentation you will get examples of “the bad and the ugly” of what may have caused legionellosis cases and deaths among people. Most of what the speaker has seen in the past five years could have been mitigated with a well-written and implemented Water Management Program. Through time, the municipal and building infrastructure ages, creating biofilm, and time creates the villain, water age.

Since 2017, Bruce Meiners has been conducting Legionella environmental assessments and sampling along with educating local health departments, plumbers, and facilities about Legionella. He has been with DHS for one year and, prior to that, on loan to DHS from the Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS). Meiners spent 15 years with DSPS as a Plumbing and Public Swimming Pools Consultant and Plan Reviewer. He has been in the plumbing industry since 1985 as a Master Plumber, Cross Connection Control Tester, and a Designer of Engineered Plumbing Systems.
